The particular element of the dragonfly attributes to overwhelming change that is able to take place one step at a time. Dragonflies also represent light and progress. They also symbolize satisfaction, flexibility, and a connection with nature. Practice of Psychotherapy, volume 16 in The Collected Works, contains essays on aspects of analytical therapy, specifically the transference, abreaction, and dream analysis. There is also an additional essay, " The Realities of Practical Psychotherapy", which was found among Jung's posthumous papers. [30] [31]

When I was in my late twenties and early thirties I was fascinated by the writing of Jung. During the 1970’s historical romances written for and by women were popular. I wanted to write a historical romance with a man as the protagonist. I thought that if I included archetypical people and situations in my story I would give it more resonance. Freud & Psychoanalysis, volume 4 in The Collected Works, contains most of Jung's published writings on Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis from 1906-1916, with two papers from later years. The former period extends from the time of enthusiastic collaboration between Jung and Freud, through that when Jung's growing appreciation of religious experience and his criticism of Freud's emphasis on psychopathology led to their final break. [13] Subjects covered include Freud's theory of hysteria, the analysis of dreams, the theory of psychoanalysis, and more. [14] The Roman god Janus is often depicted in many Roman beliefs and sacred texts. He is often symbolized as the god of new beginnings. The start of the calendarial month, year, and day were often dedicated to him.I once came across the following hallucination in a schizophrenic patient. He told me he could see an erect phallus on the sun. When he moved his head from side to side, he said, the sun’s phallus moved with it, and that was where the wind came from.” Change can always be twofold. You might encounter positive change, or something might change that you do not want changed. The butterfly also represents resurrection, beauty, and energy. A butterfly might connotate gaining something beautiful and a rigorous struggle. A butterfly’s life cycle also implies waiting and patience. (4) 3. Psychogenesis of Mental Disease, volume 3 in The Collected Works, shows the development of Jung's thoughts about the nature of mental illness, and established him as a pioneer and scientific contributor to psychiatry. Dragonflies also hint at adaptability and self-realization. Dragonflies can swiftly scurry across waters. This represents looking beyond the surface and examining the deeper aspects and implications of life. (8) 7. Orange Color Color Orange Jung is most valuable in his description of introversion and extraversion. His book on that subject is entitled “Psychological Types.” Psychiatric Studies, volume 1 in The Collected Works, contains Jung's papers written between 1902 and 1905, focusing on descriptive and experimental psychiatry from his early days in medical practice. They show the influence on Jung of Eugen Bleuler and Pierre Janet. [7]

Several years ago, when I read Anatomy of Story for the first time, the chapter on character had a fairly in-depth section on archetypes and the importance of knowing which archetypes your characters embodied, whether in their positive or their negative form. This was only the most recent and relevant case of my brush with the topic of archetypes to which Carl Jung has contributed so much. I made a mental note to dig into Jung at some point in the not-too-distant future. It took me three years, but here I am having just completed my first foray into Jung's immense bibliography. Particularly intriguing were the fantasies of an American woman, known here only as Frank Miller. If the encyclopedic knowledge of mythology, literature and psychology that Jung brings to bear on his subject weren’t enough, Jung makes remarkable connections from that mythology to Miss Miller’s dreams. Most intriguing, however, was the note of warning that sounds throughout the book. Tangling with the mythological and eternal content in one’s psyche is not some magical cure for all one’s ills. It’s more accurate to say that it’s a test that we can either pass or fail. Introversion and self-reflection can be unbelievably useful but only if we actually apply it to our lives and learn to integrate it into our personalities. Otherwise we become completely un-moored from life and wither away. This book was dense and harrowing reading but it was utterly invaluable. Collected Works of C.G.
